In our test today we take the ThermTec Wild 650D thermal imaging handheld device under the microscope. The Wild-D series represents the latest generation of the popular Cyclops-D thermal imaging devicesThis series will not only replace the existing Cyclops series, but will surpass it in many aspects.

We'll show you what functions the device offers, what features you can expect and what's included in the delivery. Take a look now!

The ThermTec Wild 650D test

The scope of delivery in ThermTec Wild 650D test

You know it: as always, we start our tests with the scope of delivery. This is identical to the other models in the Wild series and includes everything you for direct use of the device needs.

The scope of delivery also includes:

  • storage bag for the camera with strap
  • Charger
  • 2x 18650 battery
  • hand strap for the bag
  • Neckband with thread
  • USB data cable
  • Cleaning Cloth
  • Quickstart / Instructions

The operating features of the ThermTec Wild 650D in the test

The ThermTec Wild 650D impresses with a ideal size – not too big and not too small – fits well in the hand and has a balanced weight of just under 690 g including battery. The device looks high-quality and offers a pleasant feel, with the rubberized exterior reflecting its quality.

In addition, the device is suitable for use with both the left and right eye, which makes it extremely practical for everyday hunting. On the sides, the Wild is equipped with two eyelets for attaching the wrist strap, which takes the needs of right- and left-handed people into account equally. There is also another thread on the bottom to which the carrying strap included in the delivery can be attached.

The Lens cap closes silently and safe thanks to the integrated spring. You don't have to worry about scaring away the game with annoying rattling. Great!

  • Joystick control and one-handed operation: The Wild 650D series from ThermTec convinces with the proven joystick control, which was already popular in earlier models, such as the Cyclops series, and almost became trademark of the manufacturer The included wrist strap provides additional comfort and a secure grip. The joystick controls navigation in the menu: a press confirms the selection, a right click opens the quick menu for color palettes, a left click activates the AI-supported measurement. Movements forwards or backwards can be used to zoom, and a double click takes you to the main menu. The operation is intuitive, but the sensitivity of the joystick can make it a little difficult to use with gloves. However, the sensitivity of the joystick can be adjusted to enable more precise control as needed.

A new addition is a precise Finger focus wheel that allows effortless adjustment of the focus. Thanks to this arrangement, the entire device can be conveniently operated with just one hand, regardless of whether you are right- or left-handed!
  • Measurement with artificial intelligence: The AI-supported object detection and distance measurement of the Wild 650D from ThermTec offers an innovative support for huntingby automatically detects up to six objects and shows their approximate distance. The app immediately notifies you as soon as something enters the camera's field of view - whether it's a person or an animal. You can choose between acoustic, vibrating or silent notifications. But one thing should be clear: the AI cannot replace a real laser. It only serves as a practical aid. How precisely and intensively you use this option is ultimately up to each hunter. Some swear by it, others prefer to ignore it.
  • Removable battery system: The battery system can be charged via a double-locked snap closure open and close, but care must be taken when changing the battery. The change is not silent and the battery compartment can be a little difficult to open. A positive feature is the charging cradle included in the delivery, which can be used variably. This charging cradle also has a charge indicator, which shows the current charge level of the battery – a really practical function. The ThermTec Wild 650D has a Removable battery system and is powered by classic 18650 batteries. According to the manufacturer, the battery life is up to 8 hours under optimal conditions. However, it remains to be seen how the batteries perform in everyday hunting, especially in sub-zero temperatures. Your own experiences are required here, and we look forward to your reports!

  • Internal focus: What the Wild series, like the ThermTec Wild 650D, special is the internal focus. This can be operated with just one finger using a small rotary wheel directly on the housing. This eliminates the need to reach for a focusing ring on the lens, as is often the case with other devices. This enables comfortable and ergonomic one-handed operation, leaving the other hand free - a big plus for intuitive handling and practicality!

Technical details of the ThermTec Wild 650D test

The Wild 650D offers a sophisticated dual lens system, which scores with the quick change between the 25 and 50 lens. Thanks to the precise one-hand operation of the focus wheel, a quick readjustment is easily possibleThe 25mm lens provides a large field of view of 30 meters, ideal for spotting and for a quick overview of the terrain. The 50mm lens, on the other hand, with its 2,8x magnification reduces the field of view to 15 meters, but brings details at great distances much closer - almost like a magnifying glass. It is ideal for reliably distinguishing game even at greater distances.

With the 19mm lens, the game species can still be addressed well up to about 150 meters, beyond that it becomes more difficult unless the game is moving. The 50mm lens makes it possible to see game clearly even when it is moving up to about 300 meters. While the social behavior or movement patterns of larger game species remain visible, it is much more difficult to tell smaller animals such as foxes and badgers apart due to their size.

The Wild 650D also scores with its Versatility and adapts flexibly to any environmentThe sensor is particularly impressive with a high sensitivity of ≤ 18 mK, which means that the camera reliably detects even the smallest temperature differences between the game and its surroundings. The lower this sensitivity value, the more finely the sensor can detect temperature differences, resulting in clearer and more detailed images. This is particularly valuable in poor visibility conditions such as fog, rain or at dusk. Thanks to the clever image processing, the view remains sharp and high in contrast - ideal for any hunting situation where fast and precise detection is required.
